Keeping it on the Island

The New York Islanders defeated the Boston Bruins 4-1 to snap their three-game skid. The Islanders move to 18-20-6 on the season, 10-10-3 on home ice. Here’s how it happened. (NYI Hockey Now)

Here are the Talking Points from the Boston Bruins 4-1 loss to the New York Islanders at UBS Arena on Thursday night. The gold star went to Noah Dobson. (Boston Hockey Now)

The Pittsburgh Penguins (31-12-8) fell behind just 21 seconds into the game and were never close. The Toronto Maple Leafs attacked the Penguins in all three zones but only got a goal from Evgeni Malkin as Toronto goalie Jack Campbell was impressive. On Thursday, the Penguins had 46 shots, but Toronto won, 4-1 at Scotiabank Arena. (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)

The Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday began the longest homestand — eight games — since the franchise started in 1967-68. If Thursday’s matchup is any indication, it’s going to be an entertaining three weeks. Entertaining … and exasperating. The Flyers, despite having 10 injured players, had a territorial edge for most of the game and got two goals from Gerry Mayhew, of all people. They appeared on their way to a stunning victory over Alex Ovechkin and friends. Didn’t happen. (Philly Hockey Now)

The Washington Capitals closed out their two-game road swing with a much-needed 5-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers — and Gritty was not having it. After John Carlson secured the win with an empty-net goal late, a Capitals fan sporting an Evgeny Kuznetsov sweater started celebrating the pending victory. Gritty took an immediate disliking to that. And in Gritty fashion, the orange mascot jokingly escorted the fan out of the section at Wells Fargo Center. (Washington Hockey Now)

Florida Panthers coach Andrew Brunette was born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario, but it is not a reach to say Minnesota became home. Playing for the Wild is where Brunette saw some of his biggest career accomplishments on the ice — and it is where he got his start off of it. (Florida Hockey Now)

On Tuesday The Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reported that with the current injury to Robin Leher, the Vegas Golden Knights were interested in bringing back Marc-Andre Fleury. The NHL trade rumors were immediately shut down by general manager Kelly McCrimmon as colleague David Schoen of the Las Vegas Review-Journal got the scoop directly from McCrimmon. But could New York Rangers netminder Alexandar Georgiev be the next option? (Vegas Hockey Now)

Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson hopes he won’t be able to be in Louisville on the first Saturday in May, sipping mint juleps and watching the Kentucky Derby in person. Yet there’s a decent chance that wherever Johnson is that day during an Avalanche playoff run, a 3-year-old colt he co-owns will be among the 20 horses in the Derby field. The colt’s name is Mackinnon. (Yes, lower case “k”.) (Colorado Hockey Now)

The San Jose Sharks were dead in the water. Down 2-0 after the first period and 3-2 after the second period and 4-3 with literally seconds left, it looked like the Sharks were on their way to their fifth straight loss. Then Alexander Barabanov delivered a buzzer-beater with 0.6 seconds remaining to tie the game, just the fourth last-second goal to tie a game in San Jose Sharks history. (San Jose Hockey Now

Despite allowing a last-second goal to tie the contest at 4, the Vancouver Canucks were able to take their contest against the San Jose Sharks in overtime. Quinn Hughes returned to the lineup after missing three games due to COVID-19. He had a goal and an assist, the secondary assist on the J.T. Miller overtime winner. (Vancouver Hockey Now)

On Thursday, the Montreal Canadiens snapped their 10-game losing streak as interim head coach Martin St. Louis picked up his first career victory from behind the bench. Cole Caufield scored the tying goal with 10 seconds to go in the third period and then won the game in overtime for the Montreal Canadiens. (NHL)

To say the Edmonton Oilers have responded well to the firing of head coach Dave Tippet would be an understatement. Since Jay Woodcroft has taken over the Oilers have won four straight, their latest win a poaching of the Anaheim Ducks 7-3. (NHL)

It was a historic night for the Seattle Kraken as when the puck dropped in Winnipeg on Thursday, Everett Fitzhugh and J.T. Brown became the first-ever all-black broadcast crew. (NHL)
