New York Islanders, Austin Czarnik

The New York Islanders officially announce that Kyle Palmieri has been placed on the non-roster (paternity). Also Austin Czarnik, who was placed on waivers on Monday has been claimed by the Seattle Kraken.

On Jan. 27, Kyle Palmieri returned from a lower-body injury that kept him off the practice ice for 28 days and out of the lineup for 10 games. He had looked stronger in each game since his return, more involved in the offense,

He will return to the Islanders lineup when they face the Edmonton Oilers on Friday.

As for Austin Czarnik, he was placed on IR (retro Jan. 22) to make room for Kyle Palmieri’s activation against the Los Angeles Kings. With him off the roster, the New York Islanders have a spot available.

Before the All-Star break, rookie defenseman Robin Salo was sent to the taxi squad. But with taxi squads no longer a thing, it seems the Islanders want to keep him around.

New York Islanders head coach Barry Trotz has spoken about load management, and Salo may be used in back-to-back situations to rest the older players on the backend in 44-year old Zdeno Chara and 39-year old Andy Greene.

As for Czarnik, he has done exactly what has been asked of him this season. But it’s clear, with the Islanders finally back to full strength, that they want the roster they intended to start the season with.

“I’m a fan of Austin’s.” head coach Barry Trotz said. He’s a fantastic young man who I have a lot of appreciation for.”

Czarnik was the 13th or 14th forward and at age 29, is not part of the future.

In 11 games this season, Czarnik had two goals and three assists.

Now, why did the Islanders not waive Sebastian Aho?

When Kyle Palmieri is back, another player will need to be waived to create a roster spot unless someone finds their way onto IR. So Aho could be next to hit the waiver wire.
