New York Islanders
Fans React to Fisherman Reverse Retro News
When we at NYI Hockey Now shared what we had heard about the New York Islanders 2022-23 Reverse Retro uniform, the news divided the Islanders fan base.
An older generation of fans who lived through ‘The Fisherman Era’, 1995-1997, could not fathom their return given how terrible the team was during those two seasons. It represented a dark time for the organization.
However, younger fans love the logo, and because they were either too young to remember those lousy seasons or were not even born yet, only see the logo for what it is. Also, the New York Islanders have been pushing the Fisherman logo in their team stores, and those items are very popular.
On Tuesday, I put out a poll asking the New York Islander faithful if they were in favor of The Fisherman jersey coming back as a Reverse Retro?
The results were honestly quite shocking.

In a poll of 1,279 people, 69.7% of voters were in favor of the jersey making a comeback. That left 30.3% of people against the decision by the organization. One would have thought those numbers would have been reversed, but I don’t make the rules.

I mean, Twitter on Monday was fun. Peter Schwartz of WFAN left a comment that read, “Wouldn’t it have been great if Twitter was around in 1995?”
I could not imagine.
The negative comments were flowing. Click on the link below and scroll if you have some free time. But make a bag of popcorn first.

Despite the number of negative comments, there were a handful of positive remarks.

Now unlike during the 1995-96, 1996-97 seasons, The Fisherman jersey is not becoming the New York Islanders’ primary sweater. This Reverse Retro jersey will be worn just a handful of times during the 2022-23 season.
So if you are not a fan of them, you can breathe a sigh of relief that that is the case. If you are a fan of them, then they are a must-get at the team store when they become available.
