New York Islanders broadcaster Brendan Burke turned a dream into a reality when he had the opportunity to call five New York Yankees broadcasts in place of the legend John Sterling earlier this month. But those five games may not be all for Burke behind the Yankees microphone.

Per a report by Andrew Marchand of the New York Post, Burke, 38, is the front-runner to replace Sterling, 84, with the transition coming as early as next season.

Brendan Burke’s father, Don Burke, was a Yankees beat writer back in the day. As a child, Brendan spent a lot of time at Old Yankees Stadium, especially in the broadcast booth, which is where Brendan discovered a love for radio and broadcasting.

During one of the Yankees games in which Brendan Burke was behind the WFAN mic, his “Compañero” Suzyn Waldman, as John Sterling says, remembered hanging with Brendan and his sister on more than one occasion.

Just as exciting as it was for Brendan to live his childhood dream, Waldman was equally excited to share the booth with him.

Now the concern for New York Islanders fans is that one of the best in the business could be leaving his MSG Network job.

But that is not necessarily the case.

Before Brendan Burke got the job calling Islanders games, Howie Rose was the Islanders’ television play-by-play guy for 21 years, from 1995 to 2016. He had also been covering the New York Mets in various roles since the 1980s, becoming their lead radio broadcaster in 1995.

Rose was able to handle both duties but decided that he wanted an offseason and wanted to spend more time with his wife and family.

Brendan Burke has three young children, and per Marchand, there has been no discussions on a contract just yet. Burke also calls nationally televised NHL games on TNT, which includes postseason competition.

So we shall see if Brendan Burke decides to call New York Yankees games and if it comes at the price of New York Islanders games. Or will Burke follow in Rose’s footsteps and do both?
