New York Islanders, Colorado Avalanche's Nazem Kadri celebrating overtime winner

On Wednesday night, the Colorado Avalanche came away victorious in overtime to take a 3-1 series lead over the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley Cup Final. Avalanche forward Nazem Kadri scored the game-winner and despite the goal counting, Colorado had too many men on the rink at the time of the goal, but play continued. Following the game, Lightning coach John Cooper was so upset at the missed call that he left his media session and said he would be available in the morning.

Here is the play:

Here is the issue:

If you remember, the New York Islanders lost Game 7 of the 2021 Semi-Finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning on a shorthanded tally. The replay showed that the Lightning had not six, but seven players on the rink at the time of their goal.

The fact that the NHL does not allow for a review on anything that could be reviewed is mind-boggling. At the end of the day, isn’t the whole purpose of video review to get the call right? Especially when the same call is missed in back-to-back postseasons, with this missed call coming in overtime of a Stanley Cup Final game.

Anyway, here are your stories to know for today.

NYI Hockey Now: On Friday, Mathew Barzal was back holding a lacrosse stick as he had a catch with New York Islanders teammate Oliver Wahlstrom during halftime of the Atlas vs. Whipsankes Premier League Lacrosse (PLL) game at Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, New York. Alex Day, a content creator for Overtime, caught up with Barzal for an interview.

NYI Hockey Now: Goals. Goals. And more goals. That’s what New York Islanders prospect William Dufour continues to do for the St. John Sea Dogs this season as he scored his second goal of Memorial Cup play on Wednesday night.

NYI Hockey Now: President and general manager Lou Lamoriello has one player in netminder Semyon Varlamov that if moved, could clear $5 million off the payroll (need to pay a backup) creating $12 million-plus in space after Noah Dobson and Kieffer Bellows are locked up. But is the New York Islanders best trade chip staying put?

Colorado Hockey Now:  The Avalanche dominated the third period, hit no less than three crossbars, and eventually won in OT. One more. One more, and their names will be etched on Lord Stanley’s prize, forever. So close, the Colorado Avalanche.

Montreal Hockey Now: There’s growing debate if the best player in the draft is Wright or Slafkovsky. An NHL exec weighed in–the Montreal Canadiens should go Shane Wright.

Washington Hockey Now: So many questions. What about UFA defenseman Justin Schultz? Washington Capitals free agency.

Boston Hockey Now: For some reason, there is this ongoing belief that the Boston Bruins are dangling David Pastrnak on the trade market. The latest rumor is that Boston is looking to flip Pasta for the New Jersey Devils’ second overall pick. That rumor is bogus, writes Jimmy Murphy.

Philly Hockey Now: After hiring John Tortorella as their new head coach, could the Philadelphia Flyers enter the NHL trade sweepstakes for Chicago Blackhawks winger Alex DeBrincat?

Detroit Hockey Now: Could the Moritz Seider-Lucas Raymond tandem for the Detroit Red Wings be like the old Allan Trammell-Lou Whitaker duo was for the Detroit Tigers?

Florida Hockey Now: Florida Panthers general manager Bill Zito said he was not going to rush anything when it came to determining if Andrew Brunette would get the coaching job full-time — and did a thorough deep dive in the month following the end of the season. On Wednesday, Paul Maurice was named the head coach.

Vancouver Hockey Now: Simpson added the Penguins to the list of Miller suitors on the NHL trade market. And the Washington Capitals, too. Jim Rutherford and Patrik Allvin appear ready to stir up the Vancouver Canucks.
