Happy Labor Day! Revenge is a dish best served cold but the chef may have got the order wrong in Carolina. This story and more in today’s daily links!

An NHL executive source has confirmed to Boston Hockey Now and National Hockey Now that Dundon “basically ordered” Waddell to make the offer sheet to the 2018 third overall draft pick. “This was pure ego pleasure by an owner who has no idea what he’s doing,” the source said. (Boston Hockey Now)

The NHL finally saw a second player change sweaters after accepting an RFA offer sheet from a rival team. Over a decade ago, Dustin Penner signed with the Edmonton Oilers, which raised Anaheim Ducks GM Brian Burke’s ire, though Penner’s career never reached its ceiling. We do not expect Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ron Hextall to begin splashing RFA offer sheets or even splash in the NHL trade pool, but there is another move we’d like to see. (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)

One year ago today, Flyers fans woke up disappointed and frustrated. The Philadelphia Flyers’ last playoff game was one year ago yesterday: September 5th, 2020. A Game 7 loss at the hands of the New York Islanders in the Stanley Cup Quarterfinals ended the Flyers’ run. But along with the disappointment and frustration –– or, rather, when that wore off –– there was some hope. (Philly Hockey Now)

Sergei Fedorov could be excused if the launching of professional coaching career was giving off back to the future vibes. His his inaugural season as coach of the KHL’s CSKA Moscow, Fedorov has just completed his first week of regular-season play. (Detroit Hockey Now)

Jake Gardiner will have hip and back surgeries, and the Carolina Hurricanes defenseman is not expected to play this season, general manager Don Waddell said Sunday. Waddell mentioned Gardiner’s status when asked if the Hurricanes had enough NHL salary cap space for forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi’s one-year, $6.1 million contract, which was signed after the Montreal Canadiens decided Saturday not to match an offer sheet tendered by the Hurricanes on Aug. 28. Jaden Lindo is flipping the script again. Lindo was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the sixth round (No. 173) of the 2014 NHL Draft and was a central figure in “Soul on Ice, Past, Present & Future,” a 2015 award-winning Black hockey documentary. He’s adding a new chapter to the story by returning to the Penguins organization this month as manager of its Community Hockey Programs. (NHL)

The Minnesota Wild will take the ice for the 2022 Winter Classic in uniforms rich in hockey and Twin Cities history. The uniforms, unveiled at the Minnesota State Fair on Saturday, are heavy on throwback details and regional references, supremely fit for the State of Hockey. (NHL)

For the first time in two seasons, we are returning to a regular, 82-game schedule and – fingers crossed – it gets to finish as intended. Here are some key player milestone chases to watch for the upcoming season. (SI)
