Like we have seen over the last few games, the New York Islanders came out flat against the Arizona Coyotes, in a game that was a must-win given what was at stake.

The Islanders could finally start their climb in the Metropolitan Division standings with a win. A loss, however, would be detrimental, with the Coyotes currently sitting in the basement of the NHL.

The Islanders were able to get the win, a 4-0 dominated showing. But the Islanders were rather slow following the opening puck drop at it had the making of a letdown early on.

It was not until Scott Mayfield’s goal with six minutes to go in the first period did the Islanders decide to wake up.

After the goal, the Islanders did not allow Arizona to get a shot off. Not only that, but the Islanders scored yet again under three minutes later.

Scott Mayfield played a key role for his second point of the contest, as he found forward Austin Czarnik open towards the back-post and fired a slap-pass right to his stick to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead with just under three minutes to play in the first.

It seems pretty straightforward.

An open tally woke up the home team and the home crowd. But there was more to that.

At UBS Arena it was Military Appreciation Night, as men and women who served and who currently served were honored for their sacrifice and bravery to protect all of us every day.

It was a special day for the Mayfield family as Scott Mayfield’s brother Patrick is a United States Air Force captain. During a break in the action in the first period, the UBS scoreboard played messages from U.S. Military members from across the globe as they voiced their support for the New York Islanders.

One of the video messages came from Captain Mayfield.

The Islanders did not look back as Mayfield’s goal became the eventual game-winner. The Islanders needed someone to step up to turn the tide of the game, and Mayfield, on a special night, did just that and then some.

Thanks to all military who have served, who currently serve, and who will serve to help keep the people of the United States out of harm.
