Scott Mayfield’s Status TBD After Missing Islanders Practice
East Meadow, NY–Following a day off on Sunday, the New York Islanders returned to practice Monday morning at Northwell Health Ice Center but did so with defenseman Scott Mayfield.
Mayfield has been labeled as day-to-day with a lower-body injury and is experiencing swelling, according to Islanders head coach Lane Lambert.
in the third period of the Islanders’ season-opening win over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday, Mayfield blocked a shot from Rasmus Dahlin off his left ankle but managed to stay in the game and play a shift after the incident.
Mayfield’s status for the Islanders game Tuesday night against the Arizona Coyotes is not yet determined. If Mayfield is unable to play, seventh defenseman Samuel Bolduc will take his place in the lineup.
“He’s got to play assertive,” Lambert said of Bolduc. “He’s going to move the puck, but we need him to be assertive and defend well and be hard around around our net.”
The Islanders rotated defense pairings during practice on Monday in Mayfield’s absence.

Mayfield has a history of lower-body injuries throughout his career.
Two years ago, he injured his right ankle and was shut down for the rest of the season after playing in 61 games to that point and also broke his leg back in 2018.
Mayfield re-signed with the Islanders as an unrestricted free agent this summer on a seven-year deal worth $3.5 million per season.
