The hottest New York Islanders player over the last six games has been forward Mathew Barzal, who was carrying in a six-game goal streak into Friday night’s contest against the Calgary Flames.

When warmups came and went, Mathew Barzal was in his usual spot, with Anders Lee and Josh Bailey on his wings. It seemed that rookie center Aatu Räty was a healthy scratch for the first time in his young NHL career.

However, things changed quickly as after warmups the New York Islanders announced that Mathew Barzal was day-to-day with a lower-body injury,

In the 4-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers, Barzal did take a hard hit behind the Oilers net and it took him a few seconds to get up before he got back in the play and remained in the game.

“There was a little tweak last night and he tried it in warmups,” Lambert said following the game.

The Islanders are still without forwards Kyle Palmieri, Oliver Wahlstrom and Simon Holmstrom as the hope is that Bazal’s injury is minor, given that he did take warmups.

Barzal had played in all 40 games this season, with 11 goals and 30 assists.
