Official confirmation of the move has not been made by the Islanders yet.
The Islanders signed the 26-year-old Gauthier as a free agent this past summer to a two-year contract worth $787,500 annually. In training camp, he battled for a roster spot and made the team entering the season.
Of anyone in the Islanders’ crowded bottom six, Gauthier seemed to have carved out the most consistent role, often featuring alongside Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Simon Holmstrom on the third line.
In 27 games this season with the Islanders, Gauthier has nine points with five goals. He was made a healthy scratch in the Islanders’ final game before the NHL’s All-Star Break.
Teams have 24 hours to claim Gauthier off the waiver wire. If he goes unclaimed, Gauthier will be sent to AHL Bridgeport.
