Greiss Gets Standing Ovation

Detroit Red Wings netminder Thomas Greiss was a fan favorite during his five years with the New York Islanders from 2015-2020. Everyone remembers his overtime penalty-shot stop on Florida Panthers forward Aleksander Barkov back in 2016, the diving poke-check on Sidney Crosby in overtime back during a regular-season game in 2018.

On the ice and off, Thomas Greiss was a leader.

During a first-period commercial break, the Islanders played a tribute video for Greiss. The crowd roared with their “Greisser” chant and gave the former Islanders a standing ovation.

In 193 games with the Islanders, Greiss had a 179-101-60 record with a .915 SV%, a 2.70 GAA, and 10 shutouts.

The Dynamic Duo Comes Through

The New York Islanders newest dynamic duo in Mathew Barzal and Oliver Wahlstrom had not scored a goal in their six games together but had been dangerous. They have been learning each other’s game, and especially for Wahlstrom, it would take some time to figure out how to play with Barzal.

But in the seventh game on Thursday, Barzal did what he does best and drew a few Red Wings players to him before he dished the puck to Wahlstrom in the high slot. Wahlstrom showed off the quick release as he beat Detroit Red Wings netminder Thomas Greiss blocker side.

Beauvillier’s Quick Tally

Before everyone could sit down in their seats, the New York Islanders were already ahead 1-0. Anthony Beauvillier beat Thomas Greiss from the slot just nine seconds in as he snapped a 10-game goal drought.

How fast was the goal?

Beauvillier’s tally nine seconds in was the second-fastest goal in New York Islanders history. Back on Mar. 22, 1984 Bryan Trottier scored five seconds in against the Boston Bruins.

Maybe next time.

Nelson Scores A Pair

They, the infamous they, say good things come in twos. Well, for Brock Nelson, he lit the lamp twice in the 5-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

His first of the game was a snipe over the blocker of Thomas Greiss. While on the power play, Nelson received the puck in the slot and got a strong shot off as he fell to the ice.

For his second of the game, Nelson finished off a strong passing display by his linemates while on an odd-man rush.

Brock Nelson now has two goals and three assists over his last two games and now has 29 goals on the season.

GAME NOTES

New York Islanders forward Cal Clutterbuck will miss the remainder of the season due to a shoulder injury that requires surgery. Scott Mayfield will miss four to six weeks with a lower-body injury.

Kieffer Bellows & Sebastian Aho were back in the lineups. Ross Johnston was the only healthy scratch.

Detroit Red Wings goaltender Thomas Greiss returned to Long Island for the first time since leaving the New York Islanders following the 2019-2020 season.

WHAT’S NEXT: The New York Islanders are in Boston to face the Bruins Saturday at 12:30 PM at T.D. Garden.
