WATCH: Dufour Does it Again, Shows Off Shot

Goals. Goals. And more goals.

That’s what New York Islanders prospect William Dufour continues to do for the St. John Sea Dogs this season. He’s already won the MVP award after a regular season for the ages but in the playoffs, in the big moments, he continues to come through for his team.

After scoring in the St. John Sea Dogs first round-robin game of the Memorial Cup, a 5-3 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs (OHL champs), he was up to his usual tricks against the Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL Champs) on Wednesday night.

At just about the 10-minute mark of the first period, with the score knotted up at two apiece, William Dufour picked up the loose puck as entered the neutral zone from the offensive zone. With the Oil Kings defense flat-footed, Dufour used his skates to cut across the neutral zone from left to right, before crossing the Oil Kings blue line with speed.

By that point it was too late for the Oil Kings and it was just Dufour face to face with the opposing netminder Sebastian Cossa, the top netminding prospect for the Detroit Red Wings.

Although you could not queue Butch Goring for his usual “toy department” call, Dufour perfectly placed his wrist shot from the top of the circle just under the glove hand and above the pad of Cossa, just as a defenseman was about to disrupt his shot.

Cossa was taken 15th overall in 2021 by Detroit and on the Oil Kings championship run, he posted a 16-3-0 record with a 1.93 GAA, a .919 SV% and five shutouts. Great shots are how you beat great goalies and Dufour’s was.

That goal is the definition of a goal scorer’s goal and also a lesson for what happens when you give a player like Dufour any time and space to release the puck off his stick. The Sea Dogs are the underdogs in the tournament and are only competing for the Memorial Cup because they are the host city. That being said, they need their best players to step up throughout round-robin play and beyond, and right now William Dufour is doing just that.

That goal was the Sea Dogs’ third unanswered goal of the period, as they took a 3-2 to lead into the second period. The Oil Kings tied the contest at 3 apiece before eventually scoring in overtime.
