NYHN Daily: Islanders Want Answers, Trotz Not Satisfied & More

The New York Islanders are looking for answers from the NHLPA, who met with the media and team reps on Monday to discuss the Chicago Blackhawks. Anders Lee represented the Islanders at the virtual meeting. Despite looking better as of late, Islanders head coach Barry Trotz is looking for more out of his team on the second leg of this 13-game road trip. These stories and more in today’s daily link!

The fallout of the 107-page report about the Chicago Blackhawks’ handling of sexual assault allegations in 2010 continued on Monday as  NHLPA head Don Fehr addressed the players association’s executive board along with player representatives of all 32 teams. On Tuesday, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and executive director of the NHLPA Don Fehr met with the media to discuss their punishment of the Chicago Blackhawks and answered tough questions about the situation. Both defended the league’s actions, with Bettman explaining why their fine was less than the $3 million penalty for circumventing the salary camp. He also defended his decision to not punish Kevin Cheveldayoff, now general manager of the Winnipeg Jets, for the part he played or failed to play following the allegations made against video coach Brad Aldrich. This past summer Boston Bruins forward David Pastnrak and his wife dealt with the loss of their newborn son. He stepped away from the game for a bit, understandably, to mourn and heal. Pastrnak has not been himself to the start the season as that could very well be playing a factor. Pastnrak has been in slumps before during his career and he stated that he’s looking to get better every day and slow the game down, get back to basics. (Boston Hockey Now)

The Pittsburgh Penguins are dealing with COVID-19. as three defensemen have been added to the shelf. Given the unfortunate circumstances, P.O Joseph got called up as he looks to showcase the skillset management and the fanbase witnessed last season during his rookie campaign. The Montreal Canadiens have sent down rookie Cole Caufield to Laval, their AHL affiliate. The Calder Trophy candidate has struggled mightily out of the gate, with just one assist in ten games. To be primed for a full season, that’s been a different challenge for him. The way you approach it,, it’s not like coming in at the end of the year where you already have the rhythm of your (college) season. It’s part of the learning process for him.” (Montreal Hockey Now)

The Washington Capitals fell to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday, 3-2. It was a strong start to the game, but undisciplined play and mistakes led to the Capitals first regulation loss of the season. The Capitals did have chances but were stoned by Lightning netminder Andrei Vasilesvkiy and strong pushes by Tampa. (Washington Hockey Now)

Despite Montreal’s struggle out of the gate, the Detroit Red Wings have already learned that the Habs cannot be overlooked. “I’d start by saying that the last time we played them they kicked our butts in here,” Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. Detroit lost 6-1 to the Habs back on Oct. 23, their biggest deficit loss this season. (Detroit Hockey Now)

The San Jose Sharks are dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak right now and things aren’t getting any better. Forward Kevin LeBlanc joins Andrew Cogliano, Jonathan Dahlen, Erik Karlsson, Jake Middleton, Matt Nieto, Radim Simek, and Marc-Edouard Vlasic on the COVID-19 protocol list (San Jose Hockey Now)

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Travis Hamonic addressed the media for the first time since rejoining the organization. It was an emotional media session as Hamonic thanked the organization, his coaches, and teammates for the support due to a personal matter. Hamonic still needs his second COVID shot in order to play, despite saying he was already vaccinated. (Vancouver Hockey Now)

The first star of this past NHL week was Calgary Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom. He has three shutouts over his last four games, allowing just one shot to beat him over his last 127. He’s been the first star of the game each game over that span. (Calgary Hockey Now)

The Chicago Blackhawks came into their Monday matchup with the Ottawa Senators still looking for their first win of the season. Chicago is under fire due to the Kyle Beach Sexual Assualt investigation and had lost their first nine games of the season. But Patrick Kane did his job as he netted three goals in a 5-1 win. (NHL)

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman spoke to the media, stating that the Chicago Blackhawks case was a wake-up call to team executives that they need to be aware of what is going on in their organization, as they will be held responsible. “We could not be more sorry for the trauma that Kyle has had to endure, and our goal is to do what is necessary to continue to move forward.” (NHL)

The New York Rangers and Adam Fox came to terms on a 7-year extension that carries an average annual value of $9.5 million. Fox won the Norris Trophy last season and has one year remaining on his entry-level contract. The Long Island native is exastatic to sign a long-term deal with the team he grew rooting for. (NHL)

Montreal Canadien forward Cedric Paquette has been suspended two games for boarding Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras. Paquette was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct. Given Paquette’s salary, he has been fined $9,500. (NHL)

The Chicago Blackhawks have decided to postpone Marian Hossa Legacy Night, which was scheduled for Nov. 9. It is not a time to be celebrating in Chicago and it would not be fair to Hossa to use him and his name to deflect the attention away from a more pressing issue. (NHL)
