Ovechkin Salutes Crowd After Breaking Goals Scored Record

ELMONT, N.Y. — Alexander Ovechkin stands alone in the NHL record book. He scored his 895th career goal against the New York Islanders Sunday afternoon in UBS Arena.

With his Washington Capitals down 2-0, Ovechkin scored the perfect goal for a moment. An absolute grip and rip from the right circle for history. Ilya Sorokin stood no chance.

He scored it in the second period and it was on the power play. Casey Cizikas took a tripping penalty leading in the offensive zone, creating the power play for the Capitals.

Once again, history is made against the Islanders. Gretzky scored his 894th and final goal against the Islanders, now Ovechkin’s historic 895th goal comes against the Islanders.

The NHL stopped the game to honor Ovechkin with a ceremony featuring Wayne Gretzky and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. In Gretzky’s speech, he gave a special shoutout to Nassau Coliseum, saying “It’s nice not to be at the Nassau Coliseum because I lost a lot of games there.

With a smile and a laugh, Ovechkin joked with Sorokin, thanking him for letting him score on him for this moment. After all of the pomp and circumstance, Ovechkin pulled Sorokin in for a one-on-one chat, another special moment.
