New York Islanders, NHL Draft

MONTREAL, QC– The 2022 NHL Draft is in the books and what a time it was. At some point, when I have a chance to collect my thoughts, I’m going to write a story about my experience in Montreal and tell some cool stories from the trip. For now, enjoy the latest stories from NYI Hockey Now and around the National Hockey Now Network.

NYI Hockey Now: Once the news broke that the New York Islanders had sent the 13th pick to the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman Alexander Romanov the question became did Lou Lamoriello overpay for the 22-year-old? Let’s discuss.

NYI Hockey Now: The New York Islanders, who traded their first-round selection for Montreal Canadiens Alexander Romanov, kept their second-round and third-round picks, drafting defenseman Calle Odelius at no. 65 and left-winger Quinn Finley at no. 78. Get to know them.

NYI Hockey Now: Earlier in the day you had a chance to meet a pair of New York Islanders Calle Odelius and Quinn Finley. The Islanders then drafted three more players. Time to meet defenseman Isaiah George (98th), right-winger Matthew Maggio (142nd), and left-winger Daylan Kuelfer (174th).

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Who doesn’t love trade chatter? Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Ron Hextall hinted that there might be trades on the horizon as they try to shed salary. It that so they can re-sign Evgeni Malkin?

Philly Hockey Now: I thought Tony DeAngelo was a perfect fit with the Carolina Hurricanes, but now he is headed home to Philadelphia, as it seems that Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher overpaid to bring the defenseman home. He’s a defenseman who has a troubled past, but maybe that’s behind him–doubt it.

Montreal Hockey Now: Projected first overall pick Shane Wright was none too happy about not being selected 1st overall by the Montreal Canadiens. When drafted by the Seattle Kraken fourth overall, he stared down the Canadiens draft table. And when I say stared down, I mean really grilled them for their decision, as if to say, “You guys messed up”. Here’s the video.

Boston Hockey Now: The talk of the town is that Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney was trying to make trades during the NHL Draft and despite only acquiring picks for picks, multiple NHL sources have told Boston Hockey Now that Sweeney is looking to make more trades.

Florida Hockey Now: The Florida Panthers had a mostly uneventful 2022 NHL Draft as the team was thought to be pretty active in Montreal — yet only made one trade. That deal involved a pair of seventh-round picks as Florida sent its 2023 selection to the Pittsburgh Penguins for their pick this year. Florida used that move to pick Liam Arnsby.

Washington Hockey Now: The Washington Capitals have parted ways with Vitek Vanecek for the second time and now are in need of a starting netminder, with the trust in Ilya Samsonov just not there. With Darcy Kuemper out in Colorado and fresh off a Stanley Cup, could the Washington Capitals be the beneficiary?

Detroit Hockey Now: Thirty-three years after he was originally selected by the Red Wings in the 1989 NHL entry draft, Bob Boughner is finally being given the chance to be part of the team. Friday, the team announced that it was adding Boughner and goalie coach Alex Westlund to the staff of newly-hired head coach Derek Lalonde.

Colorado Hockey Now: Are the Colorado Avalanche and Valeri Nichushkin close on a contract extension? It sure sounds like general manager Joe Sakic will be keeping around a player that was so instrumental in their Stanley Cup victory.

San Jose Hockey Now: Marc-Edouard Vlasic has been an NHL defenseman for the San Jose Sharks for quite some time, yet his play has dropped off exponentially over the last few years. Despite that, Vlasic does not believe he will be bought out by the Sharks.

Vancouver Hockey Now: Don’t expect the Vancouver Canucks trade talk to die down with the culmination of the 2022 NHL Draft in Montreal. If anything, it’ll likely pick up ahead of free agency season. It sounds like it will not be an “if” regarding the movement of J.T. Miller but “when”.
