Report: Islanders UBS Arena in Running for Upcoming ASG
The New York Islanders season is on hold due to COVID and they find themselves at the bottom of the standings, but there could good news on the horizon for the team and its new building, UBS Arena.
The NHL is considering UBS Arena for an upcoming NHL All-Star Game in the near future, according to The Fourth Period. If it comes to fruition it would be the first all-star game the Islanders have hosted since 1983 when they host the annual event at Nassau Coliseum.
This year’s NHL All-Star Game will be held at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and the Florida Panthers are owed an all-star game after the 2021 festivities were canceled. That could mean that Florida would host the 2023 festivities and the New York Islanders could be awarded the 2024 NHL All-Star Game at UBS Arena, according to the report.
The Islanders had been hoping to attract major league events to the area with the opening of their new $1.1 billion home, which opened on Nov. 20. An NHL All-Star Game would be the first major NHL event in the metropolitan area since the 2018 NHL Winter Classic between the Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers at Citi Field.
New York hasn’t hosted an all-star game since 1994 when the Rangers hosted it at Madison Square Garden.
