NHL Targeting Jan. 1 Start for Next Season
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed that the NHL is looking to start next season on Jan. 1 prior to the start of Tuesday’s NHL Draft.
Sportnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported earlier in the day that the NHL had been eying the day as a potential start date, which is a month later than the original date that the league had wanted. Originally the NHL had wanted to start the new season on Dec. 1.
The NHL has not decided when training camps would open for a Jan. 1 start. A decision about camp will be announced at a later date.
Bettman has expressed a desire on several occasions to hold a full 82 game season next year.
