WATCH: Dufour’s Sick Drag, Shot Gives Canada 2-0 Lead in Finals

New York Islanders, William Dufour

New York Islanders prospect William Dufour has been a strong player for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships. Once the games went from round-robin play to elimination games, Canadian head coach Dave Cameron elevated Dufour from the third line to the top line.

And in the World Junior Championship Finals against Aatu Räty and Team Finland, William Dufour came through in the second period to give Team Canada a 2-0 lead.

Under a minute into the second period, Olen Zellweger dropped the puck to William Dufour on the rush. And with a quick toe-drag, his perfect shot through a screen beat Finnish netminder Juha Jatkola low blocker side for his third goal of the tournament.

There’s a reason why Dufour scored 56 goals this past regular season with the St. John Sea Dogs, seven goals in the Memorial Cup tournament, and has three at the World Juniors.

This goal was impressive for many reasons as Dufour has already shown his elite shot. But to create a shooting lane for himself and to be smart enough to know he could use the Finnish defenseman as a screen was brilliant.

Finland finished the first period rather strong, and Dufour’s goal was critical early in the second period to allow Canada to retake control and get that two-goal cushion.
