New York Islanders
Greiss Returns, Game 62: Islanders vs. Red Wings, Game Notes & More
The New York Islanders (27-25-9), after a 3-0 shutout victory over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday, host the Detroit Red Wings (26-30-7) Thursday night. Puck drop is slated for 7:30 PM ET at UBS Arena.
While the New York Islanders were on the ice for morning skate on Thursday, the announcement came that Scott Mayfield and Cal Clutterbuck would miss significant time. Mayfield, who blocked a shot in the final minute on Tuesday, will miss four to six weeks with a lower-body injury. Clutterbuck, who has missed the last two contests, will be out for the remainder of the season with a shoulder injury.
“We’ve been through a lot of adversity throughout the year so far. So we’re kind of used to that feeling, guys going down, whatever it was, injuries or COVID. So it’s never fun,” Jean-Gabriel Pageau said. “They’re key players for us. Both players that bring physical aspects in our game, which is our game plan every night, and the’yre two leaders not only on the ice but off the ice.”
The Islanders have not made any roster decisions as of yet as it sounds like they will rely on the players currently up with the club.
Former New York Islanders netminder Thomas Greiss returns to Long Island for the first time as due to the pandemic, the Red Wings have not made it to Long Island. Greiss played five seasons with New York, from 2015 to 2020.
Thomas Greiss will get the start per Carley Johnston. Ilya Sorokin will make his 42nd start of the season. He was the first goaltender off the ice at Thursday’s optional morning skate.
24-year old forward Chase Pearson will make his NHL debut Thursday with Detroit.
