Simon Holmstrom Will Not Represent Sweden at Worlds

After seeming to be a lock to head across the sea to play for Team Sweden for the IIHF World Championship, Simon Holmstrom will not be attending.

Despite a strong resume for a spot, Holmstrom did not end up making the team, whether by choice or not being selected.

The roster is extremely NHL-heavy, with only some forwards lacking current NHL experience. Holmstrom, 23, enjoyed a breakout 20-goal, 45-point season with the New York Islanders.

He’s a pending restricted free agent, and cited that as his first priority for this summer when asked on exit day: “I haven’t thought about it that much. I have a contract that I have to sign, and I’ve been focused on this season.”

The lone New York Islanders representatives, for now, will be Bo Horvat and Noah Dobson for Team Canada. Dobson registered two assists in Canada’s tuneup victory over Austria.
