NEWS: Islanders Extend Simon Holmstrom
The news keeps coming, and it keeps on coming. The New York Islanders re-signed RFA Simon Holmstrom to a two-year contract worth $3.625 million annually, according to multiple sources.
Holmstrom broke out last season, netting 20 goals and 45 points over 75 games. His season featured two swoons, one early and one late, but from December through early March, Holmstrom led the Islanders in points per game.
Holmstrom does not use his lethal shot often, but when he does, boy, does he ever score. He shot exactly 20.8% for two straight seasons, with less than 100 pieces of rubber on goal in both.
That is the biggest area Holmstrom can improve-shooting more. He’s a lethal offensive talent while also being one of the most defensively responsible forwards on the entire roster.
The 24-year-old will once again be an RFA upon contract expiry. If Holmstrom continues to bloom, it sets him up for a massive payday in 2027.
The Islanders still need to sign RFAs Maxim Tsyplakov, Emil Heineman, and Marc Gatcomb. Islanders’ GM Mathieu Darche confirmed all are close to getting done.
Darche continues to roll through business and get things done. Maxim Shabanov, a potentially elite skill-player from Russia, could still land on Long Island, as well.
