On a historic night in San Jose, the New York Islanders were defeated by the San Jose Sharks 4-3 in a shootout. The Islanders move to 19-20-8 on the season, 9-10-4 on the road.

How it Happened

The San Jose Sharks tied the game at 1-1, as Alexander Barabanov beat New York Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin through a screen while on the power play. His goal at 15:55 of the first period was assisted by Brent Burns and Tomas Hertl.

Under two minutes later, Jasper Weatherby gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead as he deflected a Jeffrey Viel point shot for his fourth of the season.

Zach Parise tied the contest at two at 12:48 of the second period. Sebastian Aho, from behind the San Jose Sharks net, found Parise at the top of the crease for his seventh of the season. Aho and Barzal were credited with the assists.

Logan Couture made it 3-2 Sharks, as he deflected a Ryan Merkley point shot while on the power play. Merkley and Hertl were credited with the assists at 16:31 of the second period.

Just 19 seconds later, Barzal found Adam Pelech inside the blue line as he walked into a slapshot that beat San Jose Sharks netminder James Reimer through the legs for his third of the season. Barzal and Parise were credited with the assists at 16:50 of the second period.

Sharks Logan Couture had the only goal in the shootout.

Zdeno Chara Makes History

When the puck was dropped on Thursday night in San Jose, New York Islanders defenseman Zdeno Chara set a new NHL record for most games played by a defenseman in NHL history.

The 44-year old has now played in 1,652 games (regular season), passing Hall of Famer Chris Chelios.

Not only did Chara set an NHL record, but he also dropped the gloves for his 76th NHL fight becoming the oldest player in NHL history to record a fighting major.

Zach Parise Stays Hot, Nets 400th

In Tuesday’s 5-2 win over the Seattle Kraken, Zach Parise scored two goals and ended his night with 399 career goals. On Thursday against the San Jose Sharks, he remained hot as netted career goal no. 400.

MSG Networks commentator Butch Goring stated that Zach Parise has not changed his game over his 17-year career and it was a factual statement. His 400th goal was from in-tight, in Parise fashion.

Parise now has six goals in his last 14 games.

Brock Nelson Extends Streak

New York Islanders forward Brock Nelson scored the opening tally of Thursday’s contest as he deflected a Scott Mayfield point shot.

That was his fourth straight game with a goal and now has 19 in 38 games played this season.

GAME NOTES:

New York Islanders head coach Barry Trotz made one switch to his lines from Tuesday, as Oliver Wahlstrom was back in the lineup after missing three games with an upper-body injury. Josh Bailey was a healthy scratch.

Ilya Sorokin got his eighth consecutive start in goal.

Zdeno Chara played in his 1,652nd NHL game, passing Chris Chelios to set a new record for the most games played by a defenseman in NHL history.
