New York Islanders news. Is Jon Cooper working the refs in the Stanley Cup playoffs?

The NHL’s Stanley Cup playoffs will conclude in several cities later this week. The New York Islanders were humbled Sunday by the Carolina Hurricanes and face that uncomfortable possibility of elimination Tuesday. The Boston Bruins have put the Florida Panthers on the brink, as Linus Ullmark tried to drop the blocker with Matthew Tkachuk. The Montreal Canadiens may stir the NHL trade market, and the LA Kings let one slip away.

It might be the wildest Round One since 2012 when several low seeds advanced. This is dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria.

The Daily Catch is a feature across the National Hockey Now network. It goes by different names in different cities but hasn’t been used much here. That’s about to change!

New York Islanders:

NYI Hockey Now: Was Sunday that moment of inevitability? The Islanders lost 5-2, but only a couple of late goals made it look that good. Are the New York Islanders toast?

On the plus side, the Islanders are built for playoff hockey.

Now, about getting Bo Horvat on the score sheet in the first 55 minutes of a game…

NHL Trade Talk, Playoffs & National Hockey Now:

We all think Semyon Varlamov wants to stick around, but if he’s lured away by big money on the UFA market, here’s something to watch: Will the Canadiens put one of their goalies on the NHL trade market?

Sportsnet: In Game 3, Steven Stamkos and Austin Matthews scrapped, reportedly the first fight between 60-goal scorers in NHL history. And then the chirping began. Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe is accusing Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper of manipulating the refs.

LA Hockey Now: The LA Kings had McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers season in the guillotine, but they escaped. The LA Kings had a 3-0 lead and a late 4-3 lead. But the Edmonton Oilers rallied again and beat the LA Kings in OT.

Boston Hockey Now: The Bruins are controlling Florida. The Boston Bruins litterbox’ed the undisciplined Panthers 6-2.

And Bruins goalie Linus Ullmark was feeling his oats as he tried to fight Matthew Tkachuk. Boston Bruins highlights.

Florida Hockey Now: From the B side, Colby Guy laments the missed opportunity against the injury-ravaged Bruins. No Bergeron, no Krejci, no problem? The Florida Panthers whiffed.

Montreal Hockey Now: That Canadiens trade for Sean Monahan trade might haunt Calgary.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Who the Penguins will pick in the first round of the draft is far … FAR from the only question dogging the Pittsburgh Penguins
