PHILADELPHIA — The New York Islanders (23-20-7) are officially in a groove. They’ve won six in a row, nine of the last eleven. All but one in regulation. Staggering process in all three zones, from directionless to surging. The Islanders have gone from dead in the water to alive and well in the thick of the playoff race. The spirits were high in Philadelphia for the Islanders, of that, there’s no doubt.

The Islanders, self-admittedly, didn’t play their best game. They started slow and had sloppy moments but found their way and ultimately cruised to a 3-0 win over the Flyers (23-24-6). With that, the Islanders moved ahead of the Flyers, the New York Rangers and the Montreal Canadiens to move from 14th to 11th in the Eastern Conference.

On the win, the team felt good in the room ahead of the ensuing trip to Florida.

Sorokin Talks Shutout with NYIHN:

NYIHN spoke to Sorokin about the shutout and how the game started with the extended penalty kill:

“Hard start for us. We had a lot of jobs in the first period, and we had four minutes of PK. But, played good, disciplined [defensively] on the PK and still continue to work and play in our way.”

He also spoke of the disallowed goal in the first period, “I feel, I felt there was contact. I wasn’t sure, but I asked the referee. He said, ‘No, no, nothing.’ But it’s good our coaches challenged and no goal.”

As for his save with the knob of his stick? “Little luck for my stick and me. It’s a good moment.”

Gatcomb’s First:

Marc Gatcomb scored his first NHL goal tonight, and the moment was pure joy. His smile beamed as his teammates mobbed him. Asked about it postgame, Gatcomb described the moment as a dream.

“It’s awesome, definitely something you dream about your whole life. It’s a special night that I’ll never forget.”

The play itself was amazing. Maxim Tsyplakov slipped a perfect pass to spring Kyle MacLean and Gatcomb for a two-on-none rush, where MacLean set up Gatcomb.

Gatcomb admitted he’s been waiting for the goal: “Everyone wants to score and contribute how they can. My play isn’t always on the scoresheet, whether it’s physicality or forechecking. It’s great to chip in. That’s a huge win for us. A lot of momentum going into Florida.”

As for the puck itself?

“I’ll probably give it to my parents, maybe frame it.”

His coach, Patrick Roy, spoke of how happy he was for Gatcomb to get rewarded tonight and the team as a whole. Roy is proud of how they’re playing.
