The New York Islanders and Philadelphia Flyers will resume their Second Round Series on Saturday, the NHL announced. The adjustment comes after a player-led initiative to halt play to protest social injustice.
The two Metropolitan Division rivals were scheduled to play Game 3 on Thursday night. The third game of the best-of-seven series will now be played on Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Islanders and Flyers are tied 1-1.
Game 4, which was scheduled for Saturday afternoon, will now take place at 8 p.m. on Sunday night. Game 5 has been moved from Monday night to Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
Game 6 and Game 7, should they be necessary, will take place on Sept. 3 and Sept. 5 respectively.
The adjustments had to be made after a growing number of players felt that they should join other professional sports leagues and not play in protest. That feeling pushed the NHL to postpone games on Thursday and Friday.
“All the guys in the league are coming together on something that we think has an opportunity to be better in the outside world,” New YorkIslanders captain Anders Lee said on Thursday. “Any time you have an opportunity to do that, you try to do the right thing and we’re trying to do that today in support of our teammates and everyone around the league and in our communities.”
All eight teams left in the postseason tournament released statements of support for the players’ actions on Thursday, including the New York Islanders.
“We are in total support of our players as they use their platform to bring further attention to a movement that is important to them, our organization and our game,” the Islanders said in a statement. “We will continue to work together as we promote equality and to end racial and social injustice.”
