Islanders, Palmieri Extension Update; Boqvist Out

The New York Islanders returned home from California and a disappointing road trip. They practiced before tomorrow’s matchup with the Edmonton Oilers and six of seven at home.
During practice, the lines stayed the same with one exception. Adam Boqvist did not practice due to the injury he suffered Tuesday night in Los Angeles. The Islanders did not provide an update on his status, but he is not expected to be available tomorrow night.
Scott Mayfield will return to the lineup after getting scratched on Tuesday. Head Coach Patrick Roy once again paired him with Ryan Pulock. There are just 18 games left in this season, and the Islanders will enter tomorrow’s game five points outside of a playoff spot and still stuck in 13th in the Eastern Conference.
Palmieri Contract Extension Update:
Much has been said about the Islanders’ decision to keep Kyle Palmieri ahead of the Trade Deadline instead of trading the pending free agent. At the time, the reports indicated an imminent extension for the veteran forward.
Now, almost a full week later, the Islanders have yet to finish an extension, let alone announce it.
NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun said the following on Palmieri’s situation this evening in The Athletic:
“Things have progressed in the Islanders’ talks with Palmieri over the past week, with the sides closing in on an extension while still quibbling over term. There’s no rush to announce anything, but it sure sounds like Palmieri will eventually get extended.”
For those with a good memory, term became the sticking point with Brock Nelson and the Islanders. The Islanders reportedly offered a maximum of three years, and Nelson would not take that offer.
With Palmieri, it’s being reported that the Islanders may only be comfortable with a two-year deal. If Palmieri gets it to three years, that could take the AAV even lower than initially reported. Let’s see where it goes.
