New York Islanders Team President and General Manager Lou Lamoriello remained extremely busy and added a third new defensemen in the last eight days.

The Islanders claimed defenseman Adam Boqvist, 24, off waivers from the Florida Panthers on Friday afternoon.

Who is Boqvist, and why was he waived?

The Chicago Blackhawks originally drafted Boqvist eighth overall in the 2018 NHL Draft before trading him in a package to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Seth Jones.

This past offseason, the Jackets bought out Boqvist and he signed with Florida, where they only played him in 18 games and none since January 6.

In those 18 games, Boqvist registered two goals and six points, but he defensive work saw him fall out of favor with Panthers coach Paul Maurice, who had nothing but good things to say about him to Florida Hockey Now:

“I have respect for him because he has worked really hard. He needs to play games, and he wants to play games,” Maurice continued. “If he gets picked up on waivers, he’s going to play in the NHL. We just feel, by how hard he has worked and how good a pro he has been, we do not want to take that away from an NHL guy. If not, he’s going to go to Charlotte and play some games.”

How He Fits in with New York:

The Islanders sent the struggling Isaiah George back down to the Bridgeport Islanders. George did not play in the final 33 minutes of the 3-0 win against the struggling Philadelphia Flyers last night.

With Noah Dobson and Ryan Pulock on the shelf indefinitely, stockpiling depth is always a good option. Boqvist has a ton of potential and should fit Head Coach Patrick Roy’s system quite nicely.

Roy’s system, of course, emphasized puck mobility and an offensively aware set of players. That’s exactly what Boqvist is, and if he can even improve his defense marginally, this is another coup for New York.

He joins in with the new additions Anthony DeAngelo and Scott Perunovich, both of whom have fit in quite nicely in their first few games.
