ELMONT, NY– The New York Islanders had no answer early for their cross-town rival New York Rangers as they were defeated 6-3 at UBS Arena. The New York Islanders are now 19-14-5 on home ice, 35-32-10 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The New York Rangers took an early 1-0 lead less than four minutes into the game as Artemi Panarin found Andrew Copp creeping in unguarded towards the right circle. His shot trickled past New York Islanders netminder Semyon Varlamov for his 19th of the season. Panarin and Jacob Trouba were credited with the assists at 3:43 of the first period.

Andrew Copp scored his second goal of the contest at 7:48 of the first period to give the New York Rangers a 2-0 lead. Panarin found him all alone towards the back post. Panarin and Fox were credited with the assists on Copp’s 20th of the season.

Andrew Copp registered the natural hat trick at 18:13 of the first period as he finished off a give-and-go with Ryan Strome for his 21st of the season to give the New York Rangers a 3-0 lead.

The New York Islanders got on the board 47 seconds into the second period as Josh Bailey found Brock Nelson for his 35th goal of the season. Bailey was credited with the lone assist.

Chris Kreider gave the New York Rangers their three-goal lead back with 2:45 to play in the second period as he buried a rebound on the power play for his 51st goal of the season. Adam Fox and Mika Zibanejad were credited with the assists.

Ryan Strome made it 5-1 New York Rangers with 53 seconds to play in the second period as he beat Varlamov over the glove for his 20th of the season. Panarin and Fox were credited with the assists.

Brock Nelson scored his second of the contest at 2:06 of the third period, a power-play goal, for his 36th of the season. Mathew Barzal and Noah Dobson were credited with the assists.

Ryan Reaves scored his fourth of the season at 12:53 of the third period as he finished off a 3 on 1. Alexis Lafreniere and Barclay Goodrow were credited with the assists.

Josh Bailey made it a 6-3 game with 13:22 to go in the third period as Noah Dobson found him towards the back post for his 12th of the season. Dobson and Chara were credited with the assists.

Left in the Dust

The New York Islanders were completely out of sorts for the majority of the contest. In the defensive zone, the New York Islanders failed to pick up their man and failed to communicate which allowed the New York Rangers prime chances.

The New York Rangers got out to a 2-0 lead early before eight minutes had transpired and after period one were down 3-0. Despite a strong push early in the second period to make it a 3-1 contest, the New York Islanders gave up another two goals in the final three and a half minutes of the second period to trail 5-1 after twenty minutes.

The Islanders scored two in the third but lost 6-3.

It was just a lot of puck watching for the New York Islanders, and against one of the beasts in the east, the lackadaisical play in their own zone cost them greatly.

Copp Scores Natural Hat Trick

The New York Islanders had no answer for New York Rangers forward Andrew Copp in the first period Thursday night.

And he only needed three shots.

Artemi Panarin recorded the primary assist on Copp’s first two goals, using his impressive vision and awareness to set Copp up for easy finishes. The Islanders failed to communicate in their own zone as on both goals, Copp was left unguarded.

For Copp’s third of the game, the New York Islanders got caught inside their own blue line leading to an odd-man rush against. Noah Dobson was able to get back in time but was not looking at the puck as it went right under him before Copp tapped the puck home.
