New York Islanders forward, and recent birthday boy Mathew Barzal, played an integral role in Team Canada’s advancement to the semi-finals with a late goal against Sweden and the primary assist in overtime back on Thursday.

On Saturday, Mathew Barzal and Team Canada went up against Czechia, with the winner advancing to the Gold Medal game.

After trailing 1-0, Canada tied the contest late in the first and took a 3-1 lead in the second period.

And then on the power-play, Mathew Barzal got on the scoresheet with an absolute beauty of a shot over the blocker of Czechia netminder and Arizona Coyotes starter Karel Vejmelka to give Team Canada a 4-1 lead at 10:52 of the second period.

Here’s a look at the slo-mo replay:

Over the last four periods for Canada, Barzal has two goals and an assist.

Mathew Barzal has been a pass-first guy over his six-year NHL career but knows that he needs to shoot the puck more to keep the opposing defense guessing.

And especially on the power play.

We have seen during his time on the island and like we saw on Drake Batherson’s overtime goal on Friday, Barzal can make sneaky passes on the power play.

But like we saw on Saturday, he also has a lethal shot in his arsenal, one that needs to be shown off more often especially when the defense gives him time and space.
