This morning, the PHWA NY Islanders chapter announced that Mike Reilly, who returned to play after a heart condition that required surgery was discovered in November, is the Islanders’ nominee for The Masterton Trophy for perseverance, dedication, and sportsmanship as voted upon by the team’s chapter of the PHWA.

Initially, Reilly suffered a scary concussion on November 1 in Buffalo. During evaluation, team doctors discovered a heart defect that required surgery. He underwent the procedure on November 18 and managed to return to the lineup on March 16.

Reilly is a true good guy in the room, beloved by his teammates, and the honor is very well deserved. In the past, the Islanders have seen three previous winners: Ed Westfall (1977), Mark Fitzpatrick (1992), and Robin Lehner (2019).
