New York Islanders, J.T. Miller, Vancouver Canucks

Good morning and happy Monday. I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend. We are a few days away from September, the month that New York Islanders and the rest of the 31 NHL teams kick off training camps.

Later today, I am chatting with Liiga reporter Tiia Honkaama to discuss three New York Islanders prospects in Aatu Räty, Eetu Liukas, and Matias Rajaniemi, who won silver at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championships. This interview will provide great information on the prospects, their development, and what role they could be playing for the New York Islanders in the near future.

Those stories on each player will be up later in the week, so stay tuned for that.

Here are the New York Islanders and NHL stories to know from this past weekend.

NYI Hockey Now: On Friday, Vancouver Hockey Now’s Rob Simpson heard from J.T. Miller’s agent Brian Bartlett that contract extension talks may come to an end once the season begins. Now’s the time for the Islanders to revisit Miller. New York Islanders

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Bringing back their pigeon logo from the 1990s, as the Pittsburgh Penguins reportedly are considering, wouldn’t be the biggest mistake in franchise history. Wouldn’t even be a medalist, for that matter. Pittsburgh Penguins
Boston Hockey Now: The Boston Bruins are well represented on the NHL Network’s top players “right now” as they put together their TV content ramping up for the regular season. That, more Bruins news and other items in the latest BHN Bruins Wrap. Boston Bruins
Philly Hockey Now: If the Philadelphia Flyers are going to have any kind of success this season, they need rebound years from six players who were either injured or underachieved for most of the 2021-22 campaign. Call them the Bounce-Back Six. Philadelphia Flyers
Florida Hockey Now: October will be a big month for the Panthers as they start to put things together and put forth the basis for how this team will look throughout the season. In all, the Panthers will play nine games in the opening month of the season. Fortunately for them, it does not appear to be too challenging a slate. Florida Panthers
Washington Hockey Now: With training camp just weeks away, the Washington Capitals and NHL are putting the finishing touches on the summer. And, heading into the season, Tom Wilson has made the most of his offseason. Washington Capitals
Montreal Hockey Now: The Montreal Canadiens will likely not wait too long to sign Cole Caufield to an extension during this season, as the real threat of an offer sheet looms next summer. Caufield is a player who blossomed under Martin St. Louis and is gearing up to have a big season, which makes an offer sheet even more of a concern. Montreal Canadiens

Detroit Hockey Now: Detroit Red Wings forward Jakub Vrana is delighted to have his health. He’s also bubbling with excitement over the possibilities that exist for the team this season. Detroit Red Wings.

Calgary Hockey Now: Former Colorado Avalanche forward and current Calgary Flames forward Nazem Kadri, made history this past weekend as the Stanley Cup winner brought The Cup to the London Muslim Mosque, the first time any player has done that. Kadri made history. Calgary Flames.

Vegas Hockey Now: Training camp is less than three weeks away. The Vegas Golden Knights have a couple of things left to check off their to-do list, such as signing restricted free agent Nicolas Hague. But from an organizational depth standpoint, they also have a couple of areas to address and could do so via PTOs. Vegas Golden Knights.

San Jose Hockey Now: The San Jose Sharks have made a lot of moves this summer, but industry consensus is that they still have a lot of holes. Can they fill any of them with what’s left on the unrestricted free agent market? San Jose Sharks.

Vancouver Hockey Now: Obviously there’s no pressure at this juncture for the Vancouver Canucks to move pending unrestricted free agent (UFA) forward JT Miller. As the summer winds down, so have the rumours. Yet legitimate trade option scenarios simmer below the surface. Vancouver Canucks.
