GOTTA SEE IT: Sorokin Scores Goalie Goal

ELMONT, N.Y. — In the final seconds of a dominant 7-4 win, Ilya Sorokin scored a goalie goal for his first-ever goal.

Somewhere, Billy Smith is smiling. He’s the second-ever Islanders goalie to pull off the feat. Smith pulled off the feat in the dynasty years.

Said Sorokin, with a gigantic smile, “I knew I’d do it before Igor.”

That, of course, is a nod to his best buddy and rival Igor Shesterkin of the New York Rangers

Shoutout to Steven Stamkos, who made it all happen.

The goal capped off a feel-good game for the Islanders.

Teammates and Roy React to Sorokin’s Goal:

The Islanders’ room was full of smiles after Sorokin’s goal. It also helped that the team scored seven goals and had a quick 3-0 lead.

The focus inevitably shifted to the joy of Sorokin scoring his first NHL goal.

Let’s start off with a Hall of Fame Goalie and current Islanders’ Head Coach, Patrick Roy, who had a bright smile.

Said Roy: “It was part of my bucket list, scoring a goal. I think I hit the post once. Once, I scored, but there was no time left. I wasn’t the best goaltender out of my net. It would’ve been nice, but I didn’t have the shot.”

Roy hid any jealously he had well. He clearly was thrilled for his goalie, who deserved that type of break to go his way.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau cracked a joke about how Sorokin, the 2023 NHL All-Star Game, struggled mightily in the goal-scoring contest specifically made for goalies. Pageau also wore a big grin.

As for Adam Boqvist, he thought the moment was well-deserved: “Yeah, obviously it’s like last game he was f*****g unbelievable in Boston and now he scores his first goal. You know, it’s tip the hat off to him. He’s an unbelievable goalie and an even better person. So it’s been great to get to know him and play in front of him.”
