HOW IT HAPPENED

After a scoreless first period, New York Islanders captain Anders Lee made it 1-0 on the power play less than a minute into the second period as he beat New York Rangers netminder Igor Shesterkin over the glove. His 23rd of the season was assisted by Mathew Barzal and Noah Dobson at 0:49 of the second period.

Chris Kreider evened the score at one apiece with a power-play goal at 13:38 of the second period. Kreider beat New York Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin short side after a cross-crease pass from Alex Lafreniere. Lafreniere and Jacob Trouba were credited with the assists on Kreider’s 40th of the season.

With 2:44 left to go in the third period, Kyle Palmieri wacked the puck out of mid-air and over the glove of Shesterkin to give the New York Islanders a 2-1 lead. His 11th of the season was assisted by Ryan Pulock and Adam Pelech.

Sorokin Makes Save of the Year

We’ve seen some fantastic saves this season as many goaltenders have gone above and beyond for their team. But nothing compares to the save that New York Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin made against the New York Rangers in the first period on Thursday night.

Sorokin continued to have a dominant night in goal, allowing just one goal on 30 shots for his 21st win of the season with highlight-reel saves one after another.

Another Game, Another Goal For Lee & Palmieri

New York Islanders captain Anders Lee was at it again on Thursday night, as he netted his 23rd of the season to put the Islanders on top early in the second.

Lee’s power-play goal extended his goal streak to a sixth consecutive game. Over that span, Lee has lit the lamp a total of nine times.

Kyle Palmieri with under the clock ticking down in regulation netted his 11th goal of the season and pushed his goal streak to three games (four goals) and point streak to six games.

Kreider Nets His 40th

New York Rangers forward Chris Kreider has had a fantastic season. He’s been towards the top of the NHL goals leaderboard the entire season. He reached the 40-goal mark late in the second period on Thursday, as he scored on the power play to tie the contest at one apiece.

This is the first season Kreider has scored 40, as his career-high was 28, which he set back in the 2018-19 season.  Rick Nash was the last Rangers to reach that mark, having done so in 2014-15.

Quotes:

“I mean, it was a full team effort tonight. Ilya on out I mean, it was great hockey back and forth, lots of good chances on either side, big saves either sides. It’s a great hockey game. And you know but it took everyone tonight and everyone pulled the rope so it was just a great team win.”– Anders Lee

“I mean, the puck kind of squirted out. And I don’t know, a couple of them (Rangers) went for change, but Pelech and Pulock did a great of getting the puck back up the ice quick and Marty kind of drove the middle. And I just ended up at the net front. So Pulock made a great play getting it there and the tip happened to go in.”– Kyle Palmieri

“Special teams are so important and that power play over there, that’s a good power play and they feed off that. They score a lot of big goals for them. So, obviously, they got the one but I thought, for the most part, we did a pretty good job and even just didn’t give him a lot of momentum off of it either and I think that’s big. This time of year, things are tight, five on five, and you got to do a good job on special teams and tonight I thought we did a really good job.”– Ryan Pulock

“Yeah, so fun. Didn’t want to talk too much before the game and put that pressure on Ilya, but I think everyone knows. You know, these two stars in New York City, just both similar goaltenders. You see Ilya stretching out, Igor stretching out…it was was a fun one to be a part of honestly, to watch those two go at it tonight.”– Mathew Barzal

“I thought it was a hell of a hockey game, both teams. I mean that was as fast as your going to see, especially the first period. You saw unbelievable goaltending on both sides. You saw commitment on both sides. It’s a good rivalry game. Fans were fantastic, it was great atmosphere. I don’t think any of the green beer would have had any effect on them. But I just thought it was a hell of a hockey game and had a, you know, like a playoff type of game and those are enjoyable, no matter what the outcome is.”– Barry Trotz
