I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend. For those celebrating Rosh Hashana, happy new year. The New York Islanders kick off their preseason, with a nightcap against their rivals, the New York Rangers.

Here are the New York Islanders and NHL stories to know for today:

NYI Hockey Now: For New York Islanders forward Oliver Wahlstrom, the 2021-22 season was a tough one. Head coach Barry Trotz was rather hard on the 21-year-old. And at times, it seemed, that the pressure to be perfect on the ice was getting to him. But after a strong offseason, Oliver Wahlstrom is focused on going out there and letting his work speak for itself. New York Islanders.

NYI Hockey Now: New York Islanders head coach Lane Lambert has not shared much vocally in terms of his game plan entering preseason or the NHL season, for that matter. “We’re not married to anything right now,” Lambert said on Saturday after three straight days of training camp. While the new bench boss is not setting anything in stone, his on-the-ice pairings and line combinations certainly tell us where his head is at, as a starting point. New York Islanders.

NYI Hockey Now: During development camp week, young players went head to head against one another, trying to prove to Bridgeport Islanders head coach Brent Thompson that they had what it took to play at a high level. But it is a whole new ball game when you are going up against the regulars the New York Islanders have to offer with head coach Lane Lambert on the ice. New York Islanders.

NYI Hockey Now: Scott Mayfield and Cal Clutterbuck shared updates on how they were feeling following their injuries from last season. Mayfield feels 100 percent while Clutterbuck said his pain is completely gone.  New York Islanders.

NYI Hockey Now: After the first day of training camp, we caught up with Cory Schneider to get his thoughts on returning to the organization and what it means to be a leader and a mentor in Bridgeport. New York Islanders.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Hey, fighters need practice too and a perfect time to practice is during preseason hockey. Penguins Jamie Devane knocked out Ben Harpur of the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday night. Watch. Pittsburgh Penguins.

Philly Hockey Now: This is starting to look like last season. The Philadelphia Flyers are again decimated by injuries — and the season hasn’t even started. Philadelphia Flyers.

Washington Hockey Now:  As Connor McMichael stands in the Washington Capitals dressing room, he looks like — and sounds like — a different player than he was just a few months back. Washington Capitals.

Florida Hockey Now: The Staal family was finishing up a round of golf at the famed Pebble Beach golf club when Marc’s phone rang. The Florida Panthers were calling. The brothers were taking advantage of a trip gifted to Jordan by his Carolina Hurricanes teammates to commemorate his 1,000th NHL game when the phone rang. t was not for Jordan. Florida Panthers.

Vegas Hockey Now: It was delayed the length of a sitcom episode, but the Vegas Golden Knights started their preseason schedule Sunday evening in Denver with a loss to the Colorado Avalanche 3-1. Vegas Hockey Now.

Dallas Hockey Now: The talk surrounding the Dallas Stars for years has been about improving their mediocre offensive output. This summer, they addressed that, bringing in a more offensively-focused coach and adding Mason Marchment upfront and Nils Lundkvist on the blue line, along with some healthy bodies and young superstar prospects. But what about the other side of the ice? Will all of this attention on the offense hurt the Dallas defense? Dallas Stars.
