New York Islanders, Ilya Sorokin

Two days of New York Islanders training camp is in the books. We are three days away from their first preseason game, which comes at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers on Monday, followed by a game in New Jersey against the Devils on Tuesday. There will be one more day of training camp, before an off day on Sunday.

On Friday, we spoke to New York Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin and asked him what he worked on this summer. His answer was a simple one.

“Stop puck.”

It’s an answer that makes a whole lot of sense, and social media loved it.

While the players were on the ice on Friday, UBS Arena was getting a makeover as the ice was painted, as we got to see the 50th-anniversary center ice logo. What do you think?

Here are the New York Islanders and NHL stories to know for today:

NYI Hockey Now: Scott Mayfield and Cal Clutterbuck shared updates on how they were feeling following their injuries from last season. Mayfield feels 100 percent while Clutterbuck said his pain is completely gone.  New York Islanders.

Boston Hockey Now: The Boston Bruins are reportedly bringing veteran D-man Anton Stralman into camp on a professional tryout agreement (PTO) with only a couple of right-shot defensemen in the mix along with lefty Jakub Zboril playing on the right side, as first reported by 98.5 the Sports Hub’s Ty Anderson on Thursday and confirmed by TSN’s Pierre LeBrun. Boston Bruins.

Washington Hockey Now:  “Quick! Up! Feet! Speed!” were just a few of the words repeated over and over to open Washington Capitals training camp. Head coach Peter Laviolette didn’t let any of his players sit back to open training camp — and they didn’t want to let up, either. Washington Capitals.

Montreal Hockey Now: Prospects like Kaiden Guhle and Arber Xhekaj may act coy when asked about the openings on the Canadiens blue line this season, but rest assured, they’re well aware of what’s at stake. Montreal Canadiens.

Vegas Hockey Now: Nicolas Hague. He’s a player we have been discussing a lot over the past couple of weeks as he remains the Vegas Golden Knight’s only remaining restricted free agent with training camp underway. Vegas Hockey Now.

San Jose Hockey Now: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” That Biblical verse, Joshua 1:9, referenced in the back of James Reimer’s new away mask, might well have been the goalie’s mantra as trade rumors swirled around him this summer. San Jose Sharks.

Dallas Hockey Now: Day two of Stars training camp was a bit more structured and featured some board battles, defensive zone coverage, and a lot more transition hockey. Here are the notables from the three sessions on Friday. Dallas Stars.
