In the first of a back-to-back, Kyle Palmieri beat the clock late in the third to give the New York Islanders a 2-1 lead and the win over the Carolina Hurricanes. The Islanders are now 33-28-9 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Jean-Gabriel Pageau gave the New York Islanders at 8:24 of the first period as he beat Carolina Hurricanes netminder Frederik Andersen over the glove for his 15th of the season. Matt Martin and Kyle Palmieri were credited with the assists.

Vincent Trocheck tied the contest at one with 57 seconds to play in the third. Sebastian Aho and Tony DeAngelo were credited with the assists on Trochek’s 19th of the season.

Kyle Palmieri won the game for the New York Islanders with 14.1 seconds to play in the third. Zach Parise and Brock Nelson were credited wit hthe assists on Palmieri’s 14th of the season.

Palmieri Plays Hero

With just under a minute to play in regulation, the New York Islanders blew their slim 1-0 lead against the Carolina Hurricanes as Vincent Trocheck tied the contest. This game seemed like it was on its way to overtime but Kyle Palmieri said not so fast.

In the dying seconds of the third period, Kyle Palmieri created time and space for himself in the offensive zone, fought off Carolina Hurricane defenseman Brady Skjei, before he roofed the puck past the glove of Frederik Andersen.

That was Kyle Palmieri’s 14th goal of the season and his third over his last six games. He also got the primary assist on Pageau’s opening tally for a two-point night.

Pageau Won’t Stop Scoring

New York Islanders forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau has been red-hot so far on the road. Starting with his three-goal performance this past Sunday against the New Jersey Devils, Pageau scored yet again against the Dallas Stars.

And on Friday night, Pageau was at it again as he gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead in the second period.

Forward Matt Martin found Pageau wide-open at the top of Frederik Andersen’s crease, and he made no mistake with the shot.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau now has five goals and an assist over his last three games.

Special Team Split

The New York Islanders had three power-play chances throughout the game but failed to come through. The Islanders had one shot through their first two opportunities, with two shots on their last. The Carolina Hurricanes did have one short-handed shot in which New York Islanders nemtinder Ilya Sorokin was forced to make a strong save with the blocker.

The Islanders third power play was their best of the night, establishing offensvie-zone presence and getting some looks on goal.

Their fourth power-play ended prematurely as Zach Parise took an offensive zone penalty in the final half of the third period.

On the flip side, the New York Islanders penalty kill was phenomenal.

The Carolina Hurricanes entered the contest with the eighth-best power play in the NHL at 23.5 percent. But the New York Islanders were strong while down a man, as they only allowed four shots on the four power-play attempts against.

The New York Islanders have now gone six games without allowing a power-play goal.

Notes

After missing five contests with an upper-body injury, Ilya Sorokin made his first start. Kyle Palmieri, who took a maintenance day Wednesday after being banged up in Tuesday’s contest, played.

Sebastian Aho and Kieffer Bellows served as the healthy scratches.

Two milestones were reached as Anthony Beauvillier skated in his 400th career NHL game and Barry Trotz coached in his 1,800th NHL game.

WHAT’S NEXT: The New York Islanders are in St. Louis to take on the Blues Saturday at 8 PM ET.
