New York Islanders

We have reached the 2022 All-Star break and the New York Islanders are the only team to not have surpassed 40 games played. But for the purpose of this piece, let’s dive into the statistics at the “halfway point” of the 2021-22 regular season.

New York Islanders as a Whole

The New York Islanders enter the break with a 16-17-6 record (.487 P%) with 38 points for sixth in the Metropolitan Division, fifth in the Eastern Conference Wild-Card race, and 25th in the NHL.

The New York Islanders have scored the 10th fewest goals in the entire National Hockey League, with 152, and have averaged the third-fewest goals per game at 2.36.

A part of the offensive issues is that the Islanders have taken the fourth-fewest shots per game at 28.8.

The Islanders have won 51.7% of their draws, so that’s a positive.

On the defensive side of the puck, their 2.62 goals against per game is the fifth-best in the NHL. The Islanders have allowed the 14th fewest shots against per game at 30.9.

The Islanders have blocked the 12th fewest amount of shots in the NHL with 568 (14.38 per game).

With a 17.7% power-play efficiency, the Islanders are 23rd in the NHL. The Islanders penalty kill is ninth-best in the NHL at 82.8%.

Team Leaders

Believe it or not, the New York Islanders only have three players who have played in each game this season. Those three players are Zach Parise, Scott Mayfield, and Cal Clutterbuck.

Brock Nelson, who’s led the Islanders in goals for the majority of the season despite missing nine games with an injury and COVID-19, enters the break with a team-high 14.

The Islanders only have three other players who have cracked the 10-goal mark, and that’s Anders Lee (11), Mathew Barzal (10), and Oliver Wahlstrom (10).

Barzal ranks first on the Islanders with 18 assists, with Josh Bailey trailing him by just one with 17.

As you could have probably guessed, Barzal leads the Islanders with 28 points.

Plus/- is one of the worst statistics in hockey to judge an individual on, but for a team that has struggled so bad, the fact that Adam Pelech (an All-Star) has a +17 is remarkable.

He leads the Islanders in that category.

The next closest is fringe player Austin Czarnik at +5. On the other end is Kyle Palmieri, who in only 30 games has a -13. Anthony Beauvillier is next with a -8.

Zdeno Chara, the 44-year wonder, leads the Islanders in penalty minutes with 64. He’s dropped the mitts four times (20 PIM). Scott Mayfield is second with 44 PIM.

Cal Clutterbuck, the strongest member of the New York Islanders fourth line this season, leads the team with 158 hits. He’s just one of two Islanders in triple digits (Matt Martin, 113).

Noah Dobson leads the Islanders in blocks with 78, Mat Barzal’s lead with 78 giveaways, and Pelech leads with 23 takeaways.

Oliver Wahlstrom leads the Islanders in shots with 97, Jean-Gabriel Pageau has won a team-high 51.3% of his face-offs, and Pelech leads the Islanders with 21:22 minutes played per game.

As for the two netminders, Ilya Sorokin is ahead of Semyon Varlamov with a 2.31 GAA, a .923 SV%, and four shutouts.

Memorable Moments

Noah Dobson Wins It in Overtime

On New Year’s Day, New York Islanders trailed the Edmonton Oilers 2-1 going into the third period. After an early equalizer by Anthony Beauvillier in the third period, the game would need overtime. And Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson delivered.

That was Noah Dobson’s first career overtime winner, as well as his first career game-winning goal.

Sorokin With Back-To-Back Shutouts

Back in the beginning of the season (Oct. 23, Oct. 24) when netminder Semyon Varlamov was still unavailable (nagging injury), Ilya Sorokin was tasked with playing both games of a back-to-back against the Arizona Coyotes and the Vegas Golden Knights.

Both results ended in shut outs as Sorokin stopped all 68 shots that came his way, with 42 shots by Vegas in the second game.

New York Islanders Make Debut at UBS Arena

Although it ended in a 5-2 loss, the New York Islanders played their inaugural game at the brand new UBS Arean on Nov. 20 against the Calgary Flames. It was their first home game of the season after a 13-day road trip to kick off the campaign.

Although it had to be reviewed, Brock Nelson scored the first-ever New York Islanders goal at their new home.
