Brent Sutter Officially Inducted Into Islanders’ Hall of Fame

ELMONT, NY– The New York Islanders officially inducted Brent Sutter into the team’s hall of fame on Saturday night. The team held a pregame ceremony before the puck drop against the San Jose Sharks. His new plaque, alongside the fellow Islanders’ Hall of Famers, fittingly reads: “The Ultimate Two-Way Center.”
Joining him at his ceremony, including the vast majority of the living members of the Islanders’ Hall of Fame. Perhaps most special for Brent was that his brother Duane, another key member of those ’80s Islanders, could be there to celebrate with him.
Brent’s speech began with him saying how humbled he was by this experience. He thanked his various teammates, those there and those not. He turned to his brother Duane and thanked him for all he did, and as he did, Duane had the emotion of the moment all over his face. He even joked, “You never squealed on me when I broke curfew, and I really appreciate it.”
Finally, Sutter thanked the Islanders fans for all of their support. Then, he turned to the current team, all on the bench. Referring to the jersey and the logo, he gave them five simple words. Five words they all should cling to as this season potentially slips away into the unknown: “Enjoy every second of it.”
Sutter is the 16th inductee into the Islanders Hall of Fame. He was a two-time Stanley Cup Champion with the team in 1982 and 1983 and served as captain of the Islanders from 1987 to 1991.
The Islanders selected Sutter as the 17th overall pick in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. He played 12 seasons for the organization. Through 694 games, the center totaled 610 points (287 goals and 323 assists), which is sixth all-time in franchise history. His 287 goals are tied for fifth all-time with Brock Nelson and Pat LaFontaine. His 323 assists are matched at ninth all-time with Mathew Barzal.
He won the Stanley Cup in 1982 and 1983 with the Islanders.
Sutter also coached the New Jersey Devils under current Islanders President and General Manager Lou Lamoriello for two seasons, from 2007-08 through 2008-09 season. John MacLean, current Islanders’ assistant coach, also coached under Sutter on those staffs.
